爱屋及乌 (ài wū jí wū): Affection by Association and Usage

爱屋及乌 / 愛屋及烏 describes affection extending to people or things associated with someone already loved or respected. It differs from mutual sincerity: the connection carries the affection onward. The sentence may sound warm or may question partiality, depending on what that affection affects.

Affection travels through a connection

The simplified form is 爱屋及乌; the traditional form is 愛屋及烏. Read ài wū jí wū, fourth, first, second and first tones. 屋 is a house and 烏/乌 a crow. The literal image is caring even for the crow on the roof because of affection for the person connected with the house.

The dictionary gives the broader sense of caring for things associated with a person one loves. [1] A useful English explanation is “care about it because it is connected with someone dear to you.” A mutual response from that person is not required.

Name both stages: affection for whom, then affection for what connected thing. Merely liking two unrelated objects does not show this association. Nor does treating everyone courteously establish a special extension of attachment.

The roof-and-crow line sits inside a larger debate

The consulted entry locates its principal source in Shangshu Dazhuan, volume three, the Da Zhan section. The dialogue concerns how King Wu should treat the former Shang population. Taigong invokes a saying that love for a person includes the crow on the roof. [1]

In the reproduced classical passage, King Wu rejects the first proposals and welcomes Duke Zhou’s proposal that people remain in their homes and fields, without personal favour or prejudice. The affectionate image is therefore part of an argument, not a standalone instruction that partiality should govern every decision.

The dictionary also points to a parallel textual reference. This guide uses the consulted passage to explain the image; it does not claim that every account is identical or that the familiar four-character expression appears verbatim throughout the dialogue.

Original examples show the person and the associated object

These two sentences and their settings are original teaching examples.

我很敬重周老师,也爱屋及乌,对他留下的课堂手稿格外珍惜。

“I respect Teacher Zhou greatly, and that affection extends to the classroom manuscripts he left; I treasure them especially.” Respect for the teacher is the starting point, and the manuscripts are the connected object.

她舍不得丢掉外婆用过的旧花盆,这份爱屋及乌的心情,我能理解。

“She cannot bear to discard the old flowerpots her grandmother used. I understand the affection she carries over to those things.” The sentence expresses attachment, not a claim that the pots outperform new ones.

A different sentence could question a decision: 若把这种爱屋及乌的偏爱带进评分,就得重新检查评分依据。 — “If that associated affection enters grading, the grading basis needs another check.” This hypothetical sentence distinguishes a feeling from whether it is appropriate to let that feeling determine a particular outcome.

Attachment does not establish equal treatment or reciprocity

Tracing affection through an association
Original situationInterpretationDeciding clue
A person treasures a teacher’s manuscripts because of respect for that teacher. The association is explicit.Person first, connected objects second.
Someone likes two unrelated colours for their own qualities.爱屋及乌 is not established. No originating affection or connection is supplied.
A friend responds sincerely to another friend’s honesty.Reciprocity is the central idea. The relationship between two responses fits a different phrase.
A reviewer favours an entry because it belongs to a cherished friend. The phrase can describe the attachment; it does not justify the rating.A personal connection and a decision criterion are different facts.

The phrase does not itself settle whether the associated affection is admirable or unfair. Family memories may be tender; an evaluation may need relevant criteria. Preserve what the sentence actually says before adding a moral verdict.

Compare association with a heart-to-heart exchange

The existing 以心换心 page discusses sincerity offered in the hope of sincerity or trust in return. 爱屋及乌 does not require an exchange. Someone can cherish an absent teacher’s manuscripts without expecting the manuscripts or the teacher to respond.

For a precise rewrite, use “因为敬重甲,所以也珍惜与甲有关的乙” — “because I respect A, I also cherish B connected with A.” If that pattern fits, the association is visible. If your sentence instead concerns honest conversation and reciprocal trust, follow the other page.

What if the preference rests on the object itself?

Original exercise: A reader chooses a dictionary after checking its definitions and index. They happen to admire its editor too, but the supplied account says the choice rests on those useful features. Must the choice be 爱屋及乌?

Read the explanation

No. Admiration and a choice can coexist without admiration being the reason for the choice. The stated features provide an independent basis. To use 爱屋及乌, the sentence would need to show affection being extended through the connection; do not replace the supplied reason with an imagined motive.

Use the source-reading guide when distinguishing the classical debate from your own modern sentence.
