买椟还珠 (mǎi dú huán zhū): Meaning, Pearl Story and What Matters
买椟还珠 / 買櫝還珠 criticises keeping an attractive secondary thing while giving up the main value one was meant to obtain. The pearl-and-box story supplies the image. It does not mean that every preference for presentation, craft or packaging is a bad choice.
Keep the box, return the pearl—and miss the intended value
The simplified form is 买椟还珠; the traditional form is 買櫝還珠. The pinyin is mǎi dú huán zhū: third, second, second and first tones. 椟 / 櫝 is a wooden box. Here 还 / 還 is huán, “return,” not hái, “still” or “also.” 珠 is the pearl in the story.
The consulted Education Ministry entry explains a misplaced choice: giving up what is central while keeping what is secondary. [1] English might say choose the wrapping and miss the value, keep the accessory and discard the main thing, or explain the literal box-and-pearl allusion. “Buy a box” alone loses the critical contrast.
The expression assumes that something important has been displaced. Before applying it, identify the purpose, the main value relevant to that purpose and the secondary attraction. If the person deliberately wants a beautifully made box, the box may be their main object rather than a mistake.
The story also discusses ornate words and usefulness
The dictionary supplies the passage from Han Feizi, Wai Chu Shuo Zuo Shang. In a dialogue about why Mozi’s teaching is not expressed in elaborate language, Tian Jiu describes a seller from Chu offering a pearl in Zheng. The seller makes and decorates a wooden container. A buyer purchases the container but returns the pearl. The text says the seller has been good at selling the box, rather than the pearl. [1]
The dialogue then relates this to speech: a ruler may admire ornate wording and forget its usefulness. This context matters. The source is not merely a shopping joke; it uses the visible box-and-pearl contrast to discuss presentation overshadowing the purpose of an argument.
One vocabulary trap is 玫瑰 in the decoration passage. The consulted annotation identifies a kind of precious stone, not modern rose flowers. Do not automatically add rose petals to a retelling because that is the familiar modern word. This guide does not identify a modern mineral or reconstruct a physical container from the story.
The account is a literary example, not a verified transaction with a known buyer, price or measured resale value. The comparison works without inventing those details.
Original examples specify the purpose being lost
These are fictional language-learning examples, not reports about actual books, students or purchases.
选教材时只看封面,却不检查是否讲清楚问题,容易买椟还珠。
“When choosing a textbook, looking only at the cover without checking whether it explains the problems clearly risks keeping the attraction and missing the main value.” The stated goal is learning. The sentence does not say that cover design has no value.
他要练习听力,却把练习内容删掉,只留下漂亮的展示页面,反而买椟还珠了。
“He wanted to practise listening, but removed the practice material and kept only the attractive display page, giving up the core purpose.” The example states both the goal and what was removed; it does not depend on assuming that every visual page is poor.
For a legitimate different goal, use ordinary wording: “我收藏的是盒子的木工设计,不是盒中的物品。” — “I collect the woodworking design of the boxes, not their contents.” Calling that choice 买椟还珠 would impose a purpose the collector did not state.
Name the main value before judging the choice
| Original scenario | Reading | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A learner needs explanations but selects a workbook solely for its cover without examining the lessons. | The cover may displace the learning purpose. | Check whether the lessons actually meet the learner’s question. |
| A collector deliberately seeks the craftsmanship of a wooden container. | The container is the stated main object. | Do not assume its contents must matter more to that person. |
| A listening exercise loses its audio material while retaining only a decorative presentation. | The core practice is being removed. | The conclusion depends on the stated listening goal and missing material. |
| A clear illustration makes a difficult explanation easier to understand. | Presentation supports the main purpose. | Good form and useful content need not compete. |
A careful comparison leaves room for different purposes. It also leaves room for presentation that improves use: diagrams, navigation and readable typesetting can help deliver content. The idiom criticises losing the main point, not every act of making something attractive.
Misplaced choice differs from an empty substitute
The official dictionary lists 捨本逐末, usually written 舍本逐末 in simplified Chinese, as a nearby expression. [1] That gives the general idea of neglecting the important for the secondary. 买椟还珠 adds the particular act of keeping the container and returning its intended contents.
画饼充饥 asks whether an impressive substitute supplies what is needed. 买椟还珠 instead highlights the selection that loses or rejects the main value. One promise may have no useful substance; another object may contain useful material that a chooser then discards. Keep those situations distinct.
The 纸上谈兵 guide provides another contrast: it asks whether discussion can meet practical conditions. A plan can be practical but chosen for the wrong purpose, just as an attractive page can either obscure or improve the useful explanation.
What if the box is exactly what the buyer wants?
Original exercise: A collector says in advance that they are studying wooden-box hinges. They choose a suitable box and have no interest in its decorative contents. Does buying the box establish 买椟还珠?
Read the explanation
No. The stated goal makes the box’s construction the main value. The idiom’s criticism would require showing that a relevant central purpose was sacrificed for a secondary attraction. A different observer’s preference for the contents does not establish that loss.
For your own sentence, write the purpose first: “They wanted X, kept Y and gave up the part that supplied X.” If that comparison cannot be supported, use a neutral description of the choice. For the literary origin, consult the source-reading guide and the official dictionary’s normal entry route.
