一日三秋 (yī rì sān qiū): Longing, Expanded Form and Examples

一日三秋 expresses intense longing: a short separation feels long. Learn 一日不见,如隔三秋 alongside it, read the short Shijing citation, and use original Chinese examples to separate felt time from a calendar interval.

A short absence feels long

一日三秋 has the same simplified and traditional spelling. The consulted reading is yī rì sān qiū. It expresses intense longing. [1] “A day feels like three autumns” explains the image; “I miss you so much that even a day feels long” explains the feeling in a suitable sentence.

The expression describes how absence feels. It does not change the date of a meeting or establish that three years have actually passed. In a translation, keep the emotional comparison beside the stated elapsed time.

Keep the expanded wording beside the short form

The short entry points to 一日不見,如隔三秋, simplified 一日不见,如隔三秋. That entry gives yī rì bù jiàn, rú gé sān qiū and the same central longing image. [1, 2]

The expanded form makes the comparison explicit: one day without seeing someone feels like a long separation. Neither form specifies that the relationship must be romantic. The people and relationship come from the surrounding sentence.

Read the short Shijing citation as a comparison

The expanded entry cites Shijing, Wang Feng, Cai Ge: 一日不見,如三秋兮. [2] This is a short cited line, not a verbatim quotation containing every character of the expanded modern form: the consulted poem line has 如三秋 rather than 如隔三秋.

That difference matters when quoting. Use quotation marks for the actual cited wording. When explaining the idiom, you may separately give the familiar expanded form. A comparison of felt time is not a historical calendar measurement.

Two original sentences show the person and interval

These are fictional language-learning situations.

故事里的两位朋友昨天才分别,今天就说一日三秋,盼着周末再见。

“The two friends in the story parted only yesterday, but today already say that a day feels like three autumns and look forward to meeting at the weekend.” 昨天 and 今天 supply the short calendar interval; 一日三秋 supplies their longing.

她给远行的姐姐写信:一日不见,如隔三秋,希望你早日回来。

“She writes to her sister who is away: ‘A day without seeing you feels like three autumns; I hope you return soon.’” The sister relationship is stated. The sentence does not require inventing a romantic relationship or changing the length of the journey.

Distinguish felt time, elapsed time and lingering ties

Original separation scenes and their different questions
Supplied sceneWhat can be describedWhat the phrase does not establish
Friends parted yesterday and strongly miss each other.A short interval feels long: 一日三秋.Three actual years have elapsed.
A record says two meetings were three years apart. An actual calendar interval. That the people felt intense longing.
Former partners retain a stated practical connection.A lingering connection after separation. How quickly or slowly time feels.
A future meeting is proposed but not agreed.A wish or proposal to meet.A confirmed reunion date.

藕断丝连 foregrounds a connection remaining after a break. 一日三秋 foregrounds longing and perceived time. Both might appear in a story, but one does not automatically supply the other.

Choose the translation that keeps the dates

Original exercise: In a fictional story, two friends parted yesterday. One says 一日三秋 today. Which explanation preserves both the date and the idiom?

  1. “Only a day has passed, but the absence feels very long because the friend is missed.”
  2. “The friends have not met for three actual years.”
Check calendar time and felt time

Explanation 1. It keeps the stated one-day interval and explains the longing comparison. Explanation 2 replaces the supplied chronology with a literal reading of the image.
