The phrase concerns money possessed

一文不名 has the same simplified and traditional form. The dictionary reading is yī wén bù míng. The recorded meaning describes someone extremely poor, without even a coin. [1]

“Penniless” can be an explanatory English word in an appropriate context. 名 here should not send the reader toward a story about fame: being unknown is not the meaning supplied by the dictionary entry. The expression concerns financial circumstances, not the value of a person’s abilities or work.

Possession differs from reputation and value

A person can lack money while being well known. A person can have little cash and make useful work. The phrase does not settle those other questions.

The entry also points to 不名一錢. [1] In vocabulary notes, place that recorded cross-reference beside the money-possession question, rather than beside words for fame or an object’s value.

Two original sentences identify the circumstances

The situations below are invented teaching examples.

小说开头,他几乎一文不名,只能暂住朋友的空房。

“At the beginning of the novel, he is almost penniless and can only stay temporarily in a friend’s spare room.” The financial circumstances belong to that fictional stage; the sentence does not predict the whole story.

她当时虽然一文不名,设计出的图样却很有用。

“Although she was penniless at the time, the patterns she designed were useful.” The sentence deliberately supplies different judgments about her funds and her work. They are not contradictory merely because both involve the same person.

Compare the owner’s funds with the object’s value

Three different questions about a fictional maker
QuestionRelevant supplied descriptionDifferent question it does not answer
How much money does the maker have?一文不名 describes extreme poverty.Whether the maker’s design is useful.
What value is assigned to the design?一文不值 is a strong no-value judgment. How much money its maker possesses.
Is the maker well known?A statement about reputation is needed.Being penniless does not establish anonymity.

一文不值 concerns a no-value judgment. Keep 名 and 值 distinct in your vocabulary note: the subjects and the questions differ.

Describe the stage without inventing an ending

苦尽甘来 describes hardship giving way to a better stage. 一文不名 can describe the earlier financial state, but it does not itself supply later relief. A story needs to state that change before the later expression fits.

When a task asks for factual circumstances, a plain sentence such as 他当时没有可用的钱, “he had no money available at the time,” can be more precise about the stated situation. Do not convert a limited fact about available funds into a claim about someone’s total assets unless those are actually known.

Choose which statement addresses the money

Original exercise: The fictional story explicitly says its artist is penniless, possessing no money at that stage, while their drawing is useful. Which description concerns the financial circumstances?

  1. 一文不名.
  2. 一文不值, used to conclude that the useful drawing has no value.
Check possession and value

Description 1 addresses the supplied money circumstances. Description 2 changes the target to the drawing’s value and contradicts the exercise’s stated usefulness. Neither phrase should be used to invent a judgment about the artist’s human worth.
