一心一意 (yī xīn yī yì): Focus, Intention and Chinese Examples
一心一意 describes single-minded intention or focus. Learn original individual and group examples, compare focus with 锲而不舍 and 一心一德, and avoid turning one observed action into a claim about someone’s entire private intention.
Name the object of the single-minded intention
一心一意 has the same simplified and traditional form. Its dictionary reading is yī xīn yī yì. The recorded meaning concerns a single-minded intention or focus. [1]
“Wholeheartedly” or “single-mindedly” can be useful explanatory English words when the sentence identifies the relevant aim. The phrase does not specify how many hours someone has worked, whether they have succeeded, or everything they privately intend.
Focus and persistence are different emphases
A scene may describe concentrated attention during one task. Another may describe someone returning to a task over a long period. Both can be useful strengths, but they are different descriptions.
锲而不舍 foregrounds persistent effort. 一心一意 foregrounds the direction and concentration of intention. A person may be focused in a short scene without the narrative supplying a long history of persistence.
Two original sentences supply the goal
The situations below are fictional teaching examples.
她一心一意准备这次朗读,先把每段意思弄清,再练停顿。
“She devotes herself to preparing this reading: first understanding each passage, then practising the pauses.” The aim is the reading task. The sentence does not describe every other part of her life.
这一轮排练中,大家一心一意把换场顺序理顺,不急着讨论服装。
“During this rehearsal round, everyone concentrates on sorting out the scene changes instead of rushing to discuss costumes.” The group shares a focus during a stated stage. The expression is not restricted by a rule that only one individual may use it.
Keep focus, duration and shared purpose apart
| Expression | Relevant focus | Additional claim needing context |
|---|---|---|
| 一心一意 | Single-minded intention or attention to the named aim. | A lasting pattern beyond the stated task. |
| 锲而不舍 | Continued effort rather than abandoning the task. | Concentration on only one aim at every moment. |
| 一心一德 | People united in purpose. | Agreement on every detail or identical roles. |
一心一德 helps express united purpose. A group can also focus 一心一意 on a particular task. These are differences of emphasis, not exclusive rules based only on the number of people.
Describe the stated task rather than a hidden whole life
A phrase such as 这次排练中, “during this rehearsal,” gives the judgment a scope. It can make a sentence clearer than an unqualified claim that someone is always single-minded.
One completed action may be evidence relevant to a task, but it does not by itself reveal a person’s entire intention or guarantee future behaviour. In a fictional narrative, the narrator can supply a character’s motive. In a description of a real task, state what is actually known.
Choose what the described rehearsal supports
Original exercise: A fictional group spends one rehearsal sorting out the scene changes. Nothing is said about later sessions. Which description is supported?
- “They focused on the scene changes during that rehearsal.”
- “Every member will always have exactly the same goals and preferences.”
Check the scope of the focus
Description 1. It preserves the supplied task and period. Description 2 turns one scene into a universal claim about private goals and future preferences. 一心一意 does not supply that missing information.
