The recorded later use concerns a new year

The simplified form is 一元复始; traditional is 一元復始. The consulted reading is yī yuán fù shǐ. The entry records its later meaning as the old year ending and a new year beginning. [1]

“A new year begins” explains that meaning. 元 here should not be read as a one-yuan currency amount. Nor does the expression automatically name any occasion on which something starts again.

Read the year-beginning passage within its scope

The entry points to Gongyang Zhuan, the first year of Duke Yin: 元年春,王正月。元年者何,君之始年也;春者何,歲之始也. [1] The cited passage discusses a first year and the beginning of a year; it is not a quoted sentence containing the exact four-character expression.

Keep the quoted passage distinct from the later vocabulary explanation. The short citation supplies the year-beginning connection, rather than a universal rule for restarting a computer, a rehearsal or any unfinished task.

Two original examples make the annual occasion explicit

These are invented teaching situations.

新年贺卡上写着:“一元复始,愿新的一年读到更多好书。”

“The new-year card says, ‘A new year begins; may the coming year bring more good books to read.’” The card’s occasion and 新的一年 establish the annual context. A wish is expressed; a reading outcome has not been delivered.

故事里的老师在岁首换上新日历,以一元复始开头介绍今年的读书安排。

“At the start of the year, the teacher in the story puts up a new calendar and begins the introduction to this year’s reading plans with the new-year expression.” The calendar and 今年 name the cycle being introduced.

An annual beginning differs from an ordinary restart

Original occasions and the kind of beginning
Supplied occasionRelevant descriptionWhy a different description is separate
A fictional card explicitly welcomes the new year.一元复始 fits the annual beginning.A wish does not prove future results.
A rehearsal is paused and starts again the same afternoon.重新开始 can describe restarting the rehearsal. No year boundary is supplied.
A device is restarted during the same work session.重启 can name the stated restart. The action does not itself welcome a new year.
A place has changed deeply over a long stated interval.A transformation over time. The end of one year need not establish deep transformation.

For a vocabulary task, name the occasion first. “Beginning again” is a broad idea; the recorded 一元复始 meaning supplies a particular annual setting.

Yearly renewal and deep change are different emphases

沧海桑田 foregrounds deep transformation over time. 一元复始 foregrounds a new year beginning. A calendar can change while a place remains familiar; a place can change deeply without the sentence taking place at New Year.

In a greeting, preserve the wish as a wish. A sentence wishing for good reading, health or success does not certify those future conditions. An explanation of the occasion should not add a prediction.

Choose the annual context

Original exercise: Which fictional scene supplies the occasion recorded for 一元复始?

  1. A card welcoming the coming new year.
  2. A same-day device restart with no new-year occasion.
Check the cycle being introduced

Scene 1. Scene 2 supplies an ordinary restart, not a year boundary. The shared idea of starting again does not make the expressions interchangeable in every context.
