郑人买履 (zhèng rén mǎi lǚ): Meaning, Original Story and Examples

郑人买履 / 鄭人買履 criticises trusting a prepared rule or measurement while ignoring the actual situation. The shoe buyer can test the fit with his own foot but goes back for his recorded measurement. Learn the original Hanfeizi passage, two usable Chinese sentences and the boundary between useful standards and rigid application.

A prepared measure displaces an available check

The simplified form is 郑人买履; traditional is 鄭人買履. The dictionary gives zhèng rén mǎi lǚ: fourth, second, third and third tones. 履 means footwear here. The two dots in lǚ matter: this is not lǔ.

The modern criticism concerns a method applied rigidly while the real situation goes unchecked. [1] “Trusting the rule instead of checking the actual fit” is a useful explanatory translation. “Someone from Zheng buys shoes” gives the image but leaves out why it is an idiom.

The criticism requires a mismatch. Using a measurement normally is not enough. Ask what practical check was available, why the person rejected it, and how their insistence prevented the task from being completed.

The original paragraph explains the failed purchase

The appendix entry points to Hanfeizi, Wai Chu Shuo Zuo Shang. We also consulted that work’s original classical paragraph through the Wikisource edition. [1, 2] Its opening wording is 鄭人有且置履者, rather than the familiar four-character title.

In that paragraph, the buyer measures his foot beforehand and leaves the measure at his seat. At the market he finds footwear, realises he forgot the measure, and returns to fetch it. By the time he gets back, the market has closed, so he does not obtain the shoes. Asked why he did not test them with his foot, he answers 寧信度,無自信也: he would rather trust the measure than himself. [2]

The problem is not that measuring a foot was originally foolish. The measure was meant to help find a suitable shoe. Once it becomes a reason to refuse an available fit check, the aid defeats its own purpose. This explanation follows the consulted paragraph; it does not claim we compared manuscript variants or established the first date of the fixed idiom.

Two original examples state the ignored circumstances

These are invented language-learning situations, not reports of real purchases or assessments.

尺寸表只是参考;明明能试穿却只信表格,这不成了郑人买履吗?

“The size chart is only a reference. If you can try the item on but trust only the chart, is that not the shoe buyer’s mistake?” 明明能试穿 names the available check, while 只信表格 names the rigid reliance.

模板里的旧地址已经失效,他却不肯核对通知上的新地址,真有点郑人买履。

“The template’s old address no longer works, but he refuses to check the new address on the notice. That is rather like trusting the measure over the reality.” The stated facts justify the comparison; merely using a template would not.

Directly calling another person 郑人买履 can sound critical. For a practical request, 先核对一下实际情况吧, “let us first check the actual situation,” may communicate the needed action more clearly.

A standard can help without replacing judgment

Rule, reality check and task outcome
Supplied situationDoes the criticism fit?Reason
A buyer uses a chart, then checks the available fit.Not on these facts. The reference supports rather than replaces checking.
A buyer refuses an available fit check solely because the chart is absent. The story’s mechanism fits. The aid becomes an obstacle to the actual goal.
An organiser checks a new notice against an old template. Not merely because a template exists. They are testing whether the reference remains applicable.
A specialised item cannot be tried on before purchase.Do not invent an available test.Using dimensions may be reasonable within the stated options.

The expression is a judgment about the relation between a method and its use. It does not abolish standards, prove that personal intuition is always correct, or require ignoring checks that a task genuinely needs.

Compare the shoe buyer with 刻舟求剑

刻舟求剑 highlights a fixed mark that no longer matches a changed situation. 郑人买履 highlights preferring a prepared measure over the available reality check. Both can criticise rigidity, but their source actions differ.

In the old-address sentence, either image might work if the surrounding context emphasises the right mechanism. Use 郑人买履 to stress refusal to check the notice; use 刻舟求剑 to stress that the old reference no longer tracks the current situation. You need not force every sentence into exactly one exclusive category.

Choose the sentence that supplies the missing mechanism

Original exercise. Which sentence supports 郑人买履 more clearly?

  1. The learner uses a measurement table and compares it with the actual object.
  2. The learner refuses to inspect an available object because the table is missing.
Check the comparison

Sentence 2. It shows the prepared aid taking precedence over an available check. Sentence 1 shows a reference used alongside reality. Neither the table’s existence nor the learner’s identity supplies the criticism on its own.

The source-reading guide explains why a dictionary’s story title and the wording of its classical paragraph should be recorded separately.
