一人得道,鸡犬升天: Benefits Through Connections, Pinyin and Examples
一人得道,鸡犬升天 / 一人得道,雞犬升天 is a proverb used figuratively when someone gains office or power and people connected with them benefit too. Identify the advantage and its connection, rather than treating affection, independent achievement or simultaneous success as the same idea.
A powerful person’s advantage extends to connected people
The consulted reading is yī rén dé dào, jī quǎn shēng tiān. Traditional 雞犬 corresponds to simplified 鸡犬. The dictionary labels it a proverb and gives the later figurative meaning: a person obtains office or power, and connected people also gain advantages. [1]
“When someone gains power, the people connected to them benefit too” gives the central explanation. “Their rise brings benefits to their circle” can work when the surrounding account supplies that rise and the actual beneficiaries.
Trace three parts: who gained office or power, who else benefited, and how the connection explains the benefit. The phrase does not turn two unrelated successes into a relationship merely because they happen at the same time.
Keep the literary reference apart from the modern use
The literal wording puts one person’s attaining the Dao beside chickens and dogs ascending to heaven. The consulted appendix points to Shenxian Zhuan, volume six, the Liu An section, for its literary background. [1]
This guide identifies that background reference without retelling the full primary passage. In the examples below, ask how a rise in office or power produces a benefit for connected people. That is the relevant figurative relation.
A prose translation of that relation need not assert literal ascent. If the expression appears in a story character’s criticism, preserve that attribution instead of turning it into an independently established finding about real people.
Original fictional scenes specify the connected benefit
These two examples are original language-learning scenes.
戏里,他刚被授予官职,他的门客也凭着这层关系获准进入原本对他们关闭的花园,旁白说这是一人得道,鸡犬升天。
“In the play, he has just received an official appointment, and his retainers are also allowed, through that connection, into a garden previously closed to them. The narration describes this as his rise bringing benefits to his circle.” The appointment, beneficiaries and garden access are supplied by the scene.
小说中,主角得势后,他的旧友凭这层关系取得了馆舍的优先使用权,另一位人物讥讽说:“一人得道,鸡犬升天。”
“In the novel, after the main character gains power, his old friends obtain priority use of the residence through that connection. Another character mocks it as the circle benefiting from one person’s rise.” The critical tone is supplied by 讥讽说 and that character’s judgment.
A benefit through power differs from affection and independent success
| Supplied scene | Central relation | What to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| An official’s close retainers receive access through his appointment. | Power-linked advantage extends through a connection. | The named beneficiaries and actual access. |
| A reader treasures a teacher’s old manuscripts out of affection. | Affection extends to a connected object. | The stated feeling rather than an office or privilege. |
| Two unrelated performers earn separate awards for their work. | Independent achievement. | No invented powerful intermediary. |
| Several friends celebrate on the same day without any stated new privilege. | Simultaneous celebration only. | The missing benefit/causal connection remains missing. |
爱屋及乌 foregrounds affection carried onto related people or things. 一人得道,鸡犬升天 foregrounds advantages flowing through someone who gains power. An account might contain both affection and a benefit, but the two expressions answer different questions.
Name the connection rather than using the proverb as proof
For a precise rewrite of the play example, say that the appointment led to garden access for the retainers, then attribute the proverb to the narration. That tells the reader what the expression is describing.
Do not replace the supplied garden-access fact with an invented appointment, payment or wrongdoing. If a real account only lists people who know each other, the proverb cannot supply evidence that they received an advantage. The relevant benefit and causal connection still need to be stated.
Do separate awards establish benefits through one powerful person?
Original exercise: Two fictional musicians win separate prizes judged on their performances. Neither obtains office or power, and the account states no benefit flowing from one to the other. Must their same-day wins be 一人得道,鸡犬升天?
Check power, connection and benefit
No. The account supplies independent awards, not a powerful person’s rise benefiting connected people. A shared date does not provide the missing causal relationship. Describe the two awards as the account gives them.
